Francis W. Robbins American Legion Post 194 in Florence, New Jersey, was established in March 1946 shortly after the end of World War II. It was founded as a subordinate association of the American Legion, dedicated to serving veterans, promoting patriotism, and supporting community activities.
Francis W. Robbins American Legion Post 194 is located in Florence, New Jersey, and is named in honor of Francis W. Robbins, a local resident and community figure. The post is part of the American Legion Family, which includes the American Legion, The American Legion Riders, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion, and is dedicated to supporting veterans, their families, and the nation’s youth.
Founding and Early Years
The post was established by a group of former servicemen who met in a local high school auditorium. At the time, Florence had an informal community of World War I veterans, and they concluded that the American Legion was the leading veterans’ organization in the country. This belief has proven true, as the American Legion is now the largest wartime veterans’ organization worldwide, with over 13,000 posts and more than 2 million members.
At the first meeting, temporary officers were elected, and the group decided to apply for a charter. A committee was formed to name the post, and it was named American Legion Post 194. The founding members honored all Florence servicemen who had died in the service of their country. Permanent officers were elected at the next meeting, with the first Commander, Adjutant, and Finance Officer serving as the post’s initial leadership..
Annual Traditions
The post has long celebrated Memorial Day and Veterans Day (formerly Armistice Day).
Memorial Day is marked by community-wide events and the decoration of graves, while Veterans Day is observed with parades and ceremonies honoring all veterans fwrobbinspost194.org.
Patriotic Days
MEMORIAL DAY has always been an outstanding occasion in this community. In addition to memorial events throughout the Florence community, the goal of every Veteran to it's last man is to keep MEMORIAL DAY sacred to the memory of our war dead of all of the wars of the country; and all graves are decorated with Flags and flowers on this National Holiday.
ARMISTICE DAY, now called VETERANS' DAY, originally marked the end of fighting in World War I. It is an important holiday on the calendar of Legionnaires everywhere and in the hearts of all Veterans. An important tradition was established when the Post led in the memorial exercises at 11 o'clock on the morning of November 11, marking the exact hour of the cessation of hostility on the war fronts.
